Black BearElphinstone Living Forest
Elphinstone Living Forest is an association which formed in the early 1990's to promote the protection of 1500 hectares of the finest forest habitat on the mountain, and to promote a sustainable eco-forestry operation on the remaining 6500 hectars of forest, with the intention that it would become a community forest. Most of the best habitat has since been destroyed by clearcut logging. A few small areas, of about 100 hectares each, are still intact (as of March 2008), and we still have some hope of protecting some of this rare habitat. Three important species in this forest are the Pileated Woodpecker, the Northern Flying Squirrel and the Red Legged frog. All are being exterminated by habitat destruction.

Current projects include a high school contest for solutions to reducing our carbon and environmental footprint, and a "green" tour of homes incorporating sustainable design features. Input for this project and other contributions are welcome, and membership is open to all.
